Title

Rollerena

Subject

Rollerena skating in the West Village after Pride Parade.

Description

Picture of Roller Arena, Fairy Godmother during a pride event in 1973, most likely taken in the West Village. Rollerena (as she is known today) went by the names Rollin’ Skeets in 1970, Roller Arena Fairy Godmother in 1972 and Rollerena Fairy Godmother in 1979. The character, created in 1972 by a young man from Kentucky who put on a gown, a 1950's hat, a straw basket and skated up and down Christopher Street, carried a magic wand to bless mortals. She skated in gay neighborhoods, the Easter Parade, Gay Pride Marches and in the popular discos. Occasionally she will still grace us with her presence in gay clubs and bars.
