A later account of the significance of Stonewall in the continued struggle for gay rights.
Description
An account of the resource
This flyer describes the need for gays and lesbians to continue to fight oppression. IT is most likely form the mid 1970's. It cites Stonewall as a catalyst for the liberation movement. The author establishes Stonewall as the "first" time gays rose up as a group to fight back and uses the term rebellion to contrast the use of "riot" by the police. The change in terms represent a shift in the narrative surrounding Stonewall since initial accounts appeared. By this time, the incident at Stonewall is recognized as a radical turning point in the movement for gay liberation and equality.

Queen Power article in the Rat Subterranean News
Description
An account of the resource
An article in the Rat, Subterranean News entitled "Queen Power" chronicling the night of the Stonewall Riots. Included on the page is a caricature of a gay man captioned with a lisp. The reporter who wrote this account is not credited and neither is the cartoonist. In David Carter's Stonewall research he cites the author of this account as "Tom" the Rat reporter. This account continues to develop the Stonewall narrative and reinforces the idea of spontaneous action. The "kids" were taking back what was theirs (and rightfully theirs from the beginning) from the oppressive power of the police.

Subject
The topic of the resource
Flyer from the Mattachine Society
Description
An account of the resource
A flyer announcing an event organized by the Mattachine Society early on in the gay rights movement, probably 1970. The flyer talks about gay oppression and ends with "Mattachine=Militance" (sic). Mattachine was considered too concerned with respectability and working within the system to be equated with militancy, therefore highlighting this flyer as an attempt to bridge the gap between radical gay rights activists and more conservative Mattachine members.
